A federal appeals court says a California law requiring background checks to buy bullets is unconstitutional. Voters passed the law in 2016 and it took effect in 2019.

A federal appeals court upheld a ruling that struck down a background check requirement implemented by California on buyers of ammunition for firearms.

California voters in 2016 passed a ballot initiative championed by Gov. Gavin Newsom that in part required background checks for ammunition. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals found that provision violates the 2nd Amendment.
