A remarkable wooden sculpture depicting the mythological hero Hercules has emerged from an ancient refuse pit on the Spanish island of Ibiza, impressing archaeologists with its state of preservation.

The conservation work, funded by the Patrons of the Vatican Museums, will cost around $113,588. The statue was uncovered in Rome in 1964 and pulled from the earth with the help of a wooden scaffold.
