Government officials met with tribal leaders in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday to try to mediate a ceasefire between rival sectarian groups after days of clashes that have killed at least 68 people and injured dozens.

The clashes overnight between Sunni and Shiite tribes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province came a day after gunmen ambushed a convoy of vehicles in the area.

Officials say a suicide bomber detonated his explosive-laden vehicle at a security post in northwestern Pakistan, killing at least 11 security forces.

Around 300 families fled sectarian violence on Saturday in northwest Pakistan as fresh sectarian clashes killed another 32 people.

More than 30 people have died in clashes between militant Sunni and Shiite groups in northwestern Pakistan, police say. Scores have been killed in such sectarian violence in the past few months.

The attack occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province – an area with a history of sectarian violence between Sunni and Shiite communities. The convoy, travelling from Parachinar to Peshawar, was ambushed despite prior threats to Shiites in the region.
