Family and others carrying on Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy of equality, justice and nonviolent protest want Americans to remember that Monday's holiday is really about helping others.

The granddaughter of a former slave delivered the keynote address in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King on Monday at Lincoln University. Delivering remarks for nearly an hour, Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham,

“With malice toward none, with charity for all,” even after four years of horrific war.

When Abraham Lincoln was preparing his speech for his second inaugural in 1865, historians think he cut the sentences and paragraphs from a printed draft and pasted them onto the copy he planned to read from. An excellent orator, he adjusted the spacing, apparently for cadence and dramatic effect.

Footage captured by Carlos Bastos shows protesters lining the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool as the march made its way to the Lincoln Memorial, ending in a rally. The demonstration, dubbed the People’s March, was expected to draw thousands to DC.
