Andrea Kimi Antonelli became the youngest ever driver to claim an F1 pole position in any race format on Friday when he scorched around the track to ensure he will start at the front of the grid in the sprint event at the Miami Grand Prix.

Antonelli, preparing for only his sixth grand prix weekend, laps with a best time to pip McLaren’s championship leader Oscar Piastri.

Mercedes' Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli became Formula One's youngest polesitter in any format after a mighty final lap in Miami Grand Prix sprint qualifying on Friday.

Since that awkward exchange, Piastri, 24, has gone on to earn his first five victories, including three already this season making him the Formula One world championship leader coming into the CRYPTO.com Miami Grand Prix at the Miami International Autodrome at Hard Rock Stadium. And his No. 81 McLaren Racing car topped the opening practice May 2.

The first of two races at this weekend's Miami Grand Prix takes place today (Saturday, May 3), with the sprint race set to test drivers' skills over 100km. Taking place over 19 laps (or 60 minutes if there are red flags or safety cars) the sprint race is a third of the main grand prix distance,
