Universal Pictures' live-action film 'How to Train Your Dragon' topped the box office this weekend with $83.7 million, as family-friendly fare continues to draw audiences to theaters.

How to Train Your Dragon has set an audience score record for live-action adaptations of animated films, compared to all the Disney entries.

Mason Thames and Nico Parker are the miscast stars of writer-director Dean DeBlois’s good-looking but deadly dull live-action remake of the 2010 film.

In an era of skepticism around live-action remakes, Universal believes audiences will take flight with Hiccup and Toothless again.

But arguably the most fun catch we made is the inclusion of director DeBlois in the actual Isle of Berk. Actor Mason Thames (Hiccup) and Nico Parker (Astrid) confirmed the cameo to NBC Insider when we spoke to them for the film's junket.

The live-action update of the popular animated film grossed $8.6 million in regular Thursday shows, and another $2.5 million from early access Wednesday screenings.
