The U.S. 5th Infantry Division was stationed in Augsburg at the end of World War II, being replaced by the 11th Airborne Division during Operation Gyroscope, 1947-1956. The 24th Infantry Division was reactivated July 1, 1956, and replaced the 11th Airborne Division at Augsburg.
