The Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos was inaugurated in 1969 and is considered one of the most significant in Crete. It houses collections of very important archaeological findings from the entire region of eastern Crete, extending from Malia to the distant Zakros.

Agios Nikolaos is a small town with an impressive and fascinating history. It occupies the site of the ancient city of “Lato pros Kamara” which was the port of the city “Lato pros Etera”. The latter was a city which flourished during the Archaic and Classical Age as well as during the Roman era.

Agios Nikolaos is full of impressive bays and unique hiking trails. A nice way to get in touch with the cultural elements of the city is to take a stroll in the city centre. You could walk by the famous Lake Voulismeni and admire the stunning scenery.

A world renowned tourist resort, north of Agios Nikolaos, with scenic beaches, wind-protected sandy shores, crystal clear waters and a serene ambiance. Visitors can enjoy the beaches of Schisma, Chiona, Kolokytha, Dianiskari and Alykes.

The port is actually a harbour (about 200m in length) near the larger ports of Greece and Turkey and a favourite destination for cruise liners in the south-eastern Mediterranean available for docking throughout the year.
