Today, 86 years ago, Chesty Puller earned his 2nd Navy Cross. From Sept. 20 to Oct. 1, 1932, 1st Lt. Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller led his patrol to escape and caused heavy enemy casualties during three ambushes on his unit. To boost public morale, "Guadalcanal Diary" (1943) was released within 10 months of the end of the battle. The Marines, Navy, Army and Coast Guard all assisted in the production. The movie was mostly shot at Camp Pendleton, and several Marines were given minor speaking roles.
