The Gila is a pristine and wild landscape in New Mexico that provides habitat for many game and non-game species, and is one of the last true wild places in the Southwest. We want to help conserve its wildlife and another natural resources for the generations to come. Will you add your voice to our comments to the Bureau of Reclamation to oppose this costly and dubious Gila River diversion? Our future generation of sportsmen and women will thank you for it! http://nmwildlife.org/news/submit-comm

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico is well-known among birders as a premier place to see huge flocks of snow geese and sandhill cranes during winter. But it's not just for the birds. These Rio Grande wetlands also provide habitat for migrating shorebirds and songbirds, and a home to other wildlife all year long like the endangered New Mexico meadow jumping mouse and Rio Grande silvery minnow. Have you ever been to visit this birding hotspot? Video: the camera pans across a

August 8th is #InternationalCatDay! The bobcat is New Mexico's most abundant wild feline. These medium-sized wild cats can be spotted in a variety of habitats, from deserts to forests to urban areas. NMWC is home to a non-releasable bobcat, 18-year-old Joni, who has been an Ambassador Animal here since she was rescued as an orphaned kitten in 2006. Recently, Joni received a new piece of furniture in her home, a lounging platform made out of logs with natural bark surface. Watch her check out the

Happy International Lynx Day! The most well-known lynx in New Mexico is the bobcat (Lynx rufus), a medium-sized wild cat that can be found in a wide variety of habitats, including suburban areas. NMWC is home to a 19-year-old non-releasable bobcat named Joni, who is one of our oldest Ambassador Animals. Joni was orphaned as a baby and became habituated to humans during her time in rehabilitation, so she was unable to return to the wild. Right now, she is helping us raise another orphaned bobcat

Not all of us are snowbirds. Several of our Ambassador Animals are experiencing their first winter here. Phoenix the Aplomado Falcon (exploring a bowl of snow in this video), Onyx the American Crow, Mortimer the Turkey Vulture, Yucca the Porcupine, and Canyon the Collared Lizard are among the young newcomers to NMWC. All of these species are native to New Mexico and naturally spend winters here, although some migrate to lower elevations or warmer areas in the region. Rest assured, they’ll be saf

New Mexico Wilderness Alliance on Instagram: "An endangered Mexican gray wolf named Taylor has once again made the long journey back to Mount Taylor, despite being captured and relocated twice by wildlife officials. For true recovery, Mexican wolves need access to habitat north of I-40, including northern New Mexico, the Grand Canyon region, and eventual connection with northern gray wolves to strengthen genetic diversity. Taylor’s journey is a reminder that recovery doesn’t happen inside lines

Boom. Strut. Repeat. Every spring, prairie chickens (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus) hit the dance floor—known as a lek—to compete for love. These grassland birds bring the drama, the dance moves, and flashy calls to challenge other competitors and entice potential mates. Lekking is not just a show; it’s a sign of healthy prairie ecosystems. Protecting them means protecting a whole community of wildlife. Each morning, these prairie chicken bachelors show up loud, proud, and puffed up—ready to perfor
